Overview of Music at Kington St Michael
At Kington St Michael Primary School, music is a way for children to express their emotions enjoyably and creatively. It plays an important role in personal development and we aim to provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform, listen, analyse and enjoy music across a wide range of periods, genres and styles. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and aim to provide opportunities for children to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
Part A : Curriculum Music
Kapow is used as curriculum guidance and support for our teachers to deliver the correct progression of skills to the children across the key stages. Additional aspects are embedded into the planning such as whole class instrumental music, school performances and special musical events, such as a live professional performer.
Part B : Co-curricular Music
Children are given the opportunity to perform, listen to, review and evaluate their own and others music across a range of periods, genres and styles. We hold termly music concerts to celebrate musical achievements across a range of instruments from violin, flute and piano to drums, electric guitar and singing, including an end of year outdoor music festival, where everyone was able to perform musically and parents were able to enjoy the event outside on the school field.
Children are also given the opportunity to learn a music instrument to enable them to create and compose music with these instruments. This is both through 1:1 lessons with a range of experienced peripatetic teachers and through becoming a member of a Rock Steady band.
A new school choir is to form in term 1, with weekly practices and led by Mrs Bevan. This will be an important area of our musical presence in KSM and will allow singers to model techniques and help to improve the quality of singing throughout the school.
Part C : Musical Experiences
There are a number of experiences planned for the school throughout the coming academic year.
-
As part of our musical resources, an order for a whole class set of harmonicas will be purchased with the £183 funding from the year 3 and year 4 class recorder training that was undertaken in the previous academic year.
-
Termly productions. KS1 Nativity production, UKS2 end of year production and the Harvest and Easter musical church service for LKS2.
-
A live performance in the school hall, of a professional musician, to inspire children to listen and love different styles. A number of performers have been contacted, however as yet has not been booked for the new year.
In the future…
-
To encourage children to become skilled in tuned and non-tuned instruments by including the use of a greater choice of instruments in our planned curriculum lessons and performances.
