Statement of Intent

Our Art and Design curriculum aims to inspire creativity, develop artistic skills, and foster self-expression in every child. We believe that art is a vital part of a broad and balanced education and provides all pupils with the opportunity to explore, communicate, and reflect through visual and tactile experiences.

Our intent is to develop creativity and imagination by giving pupils the freedom to explore their ideas and express themselves through a range of artistic media and techniques. We aim to build technical skills progressively in drawing, painting, sculpture, and other craft and design techniques, enabling pupils to refine their work and build confidence in their abilities. We want to encourage critical thinking and reflection, allowing children to evaluate their own work and that of others using appropriate artistic vocabulary. Our curriculum exposes pupils to a wide range of artists, designers, and craft makers, from different times, cultures, and backgrounds, to broaden their understanding of the world and inspire their own artistic journey. In addition, we aim to promote resilience and experimentation, encouraging children to take creative risks, learn from mistakes, and find enjoyment in the process of making art. Finally, we aim to ensure inclusion and accessibility, enabling all pupils – including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds – to engage fully and achieve success in art. Through high-quality art education, we aim to nurture confident, curious, and reflective young artists who appreciate the role of art in their own lives, in culture, and in the wider world.
