Statement of Intent

Our English Curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the language skills they need to become confident, effective communicators and lifelong readers and writers. We believe that a strong foundation in English is essential for success across the curriculum and beyond. Our primary intent is to build strong oracy skills to enable pupils to express themselves clearly, ask questions, debate, perform and engage respectfully in discussion.

Fostering a love of reading is a key aim of our curriculum, exposing pupils to high quality texts from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds supports our reading for pleasure ethos where we aspire to promote a lifelong love of reading. To establish this, early reading and phonics are the back bone of our English curriculum, ensuring pupils become fluent, confident readers through our systematic high quality phonics teaching.

Alongside our teaching of reading, we also ensure a consistent approach to teaching writing. A strong focus on transcription skills enables pupils to develop automaticity in their handwriting and spelling, freeing up their working memory to develop strong composition skills. This will, in turn, develop confident and creative writers who can write with purpose and accuracy using rich vocabulary and language.
